Sender Reputation

What is Sender Reputation?

Sender reputation is a score assigned by mobile network operators to message senders based on delivery success rates, complaint volumes, and traffic patterns.

When a business sends A2P SMS at scale, mobile network operators track its delivery patterns. The resulting sender reputation reflects how reliably the sender's traffic reaches valid, active subscribers. Key factors include delivery failure ratio (messages sent to invalid or inactive numbers), complaint rate (recipients reporting messages as spam), traffic volume consistency, and compliance with local messaging regulations.

A high sender reputation means messages are routed through priority paths with faster delivery and fewer filtering interventions. A low reputation triggers throttling, delayed delivery, or in severe cases, temporary blacklisting of the sender's routes.

Sender reputation is not a single universal score — each carrier maintains its own assessment. This is why phone number verification matters: by removing invalid and inactive numbers before sending, businesses keep their failure ratio low and maintain favorable routing treatment across carrier networks. Regular database cleaning is the most direct lever for protecting sender reputation.
