GSMA Universal Profile

What is the GSMA Universal Profile?

The GSMA Universal Profile is the technical specification that standardizes RCS features — including rich media, read receipts, typing indicators, and verified sender profiles — so they work consistently across different carriers and devices.

What does the Universal Profile cover?

The GSMA Universal Profile is what makes RCS interoperable. Without it, each carrier could implement RCS differently, creating fragmentation. The specification covers rich media formatting, interactive elements, delivery indicators, and verified sender profiles.

Which versions of the Universal Profile are in use?

Version 2.4 is the most widely deployed, with version 2.7 adding MLS-based end-to-end encryption specifications published in March 2025.

Why does the Universal Profile matter for businesses?

For businesses evaluating RCS, the Universal Profile matters because it determines which features are available on a given carrier. Apple's RCS implementation in iOS 18 follows the Universal Profile standard.
