Direct Route

What is a direct route?

A direct route is a delivery path where an SMS or voice provider connects straight to the destination mobile network operator, with no intermediate resellers in between.

Why do direct routes matter?

Every message or call travels along a route. On a direct route, the provider has its own connection to the destination mobile network operator (MNO), so traffic enters the operator's network in one hop. On indirect routes, traffic passes through one or more intermediaries, and each hop adds latency, cost and a point where delivery data can get lost.

Direct routes matter most for time-sensitive A2P traffic. A one-time password that arrives late fails its purpose, and a delivery report that comes from an intermediary instead of the operator can't be trusted for billing or retries. Direct connections also keep traffic compliant with the operator's rules, which reduces the risk of filtering that hits grey routes.

Example

A fintech app sees login codes arriving with long delays in one country. After moving that traffic to a direct operator route and testing it, codes arrive faster and delivery reports match what users actually receive.
